Big Pine Key is located about 26 miles from Key West. It is somewhat of a nature lover’s Paradise. The famous Key Deer mainly live on Big Pine Key although you will occasionally see them on other islands. There are a large variety of different species of birds on Big Pine as well. There is a complete building moratorium on Big Pine Key so what you see built now is what you’ll see 20 years from now. Big Pine Key also has “The Blue Hole which is the only source of natural fresh water in all the Florida Keys. It is home to much fresh water and brackish water fish, several alligators, and is often where the Key Deer will go for a drink of water.
Big Pine Key is also the island in the Lower Keys where you will get the most house for the dollar. A lot of the Florida Keys labor force live on Big Pine because of the prices and it is also located about halfway between Key West and Marathon which is where the larger amount of the jobs are. Big Pine also has a few restaurants, bars, nightlife and a Winn-Dixi which is the only major grocery store between Key West and Marathon.
