Ramrod Key is about 22 miles from Key West. Much like Little Torch Key, Ramrod is also separated by US1 as far as the home prices go. The Gulf side of Ramrod has mostly dry lot (non-waterfront) homes or “Swimming Canal” houses which means they are on a canal but the canal is filled in at the end so no boats can go in or out. You can swim, paddleboard, or kayak in these canals but there is no access to the open Gulf or Atlantic. The Atlantic side of Ramrod is a subdivision called “Breezeswept Beach Estates” which are all canal or open water houses. These homes are priced a lot higher than the houses on the Gulf side but still a little lower than Little Torch’s Jolly Roger Estates.
Ramrod Key has two restaurants. Both are Tiki Bar style. One is Boondocks which has a large dining section, a big bar that also offers the full menu in the dining area, and always has a few sporting events on the TVs. Boondocks even has a mini-golf area that they claim is for the children but I see a lot more adults playing than kids. The other is the Looe Key Tiki Bar which is more bar-style than Boondocks but also has great food. Looe Key Tiki Bar is priced a little lower than Boondocks and is more popular with the locals. They have live music every night and are somewhat of a party scene. Ramrod is also only about 10 minutes from Winn-Dixi on Big Pine which makes it popular with the locals and snowbirds.
